Goo Gone!!!!!! It feels like the day I discovered nutella and starting eating it by the spoonful. Where has this stuff been all my life?!
The Story Begins
Last weekend my 2-year-old got grease on his nice khaki cargo shorts. I was sooooo bummed—to say the least. Grease! I had NO HOPE! In my mind, the pants were ruined. How disappointing. So disappointing in fact, I just didn’t want to think about it.
We came home from vacation, the shorts were set aside and then to make matters worse, they were accidentally thrown in the wash—and of course followed straight into the dryer.
As I’m folding the laundry, I pull them out and disappointment kicks in further. They looked awful and now after going through the dryer, hope wasn’t even on my radar.
I don’t know what came over me. Possessions just aren’t typically that important to me. I am just not a materialistic person. I mean come on, it’s just clothes, right? Clothes are going to waste away. The life of my child and the time I spend with them is much more precious to me. But for some reason, in this moment, the stain on these pants was just devastating me!
(Maybe because my son is a completely typical two-year-old boy who reminds me a lot of the toddler on the front cover of I’ll Love You Forever. Not to mention this is one of the last pair of nice shorts we have to make it through the rest of the summer!)
Back to the part where hope wasn’t even on my radar . . .
As I’m folding the pants, a yellow bottle and the words “Goo Gone” come to my mind. A light bulb went on! A miracle really, because I had never even used Goo Gone before, I just remembered hearing something about it, seeing it on one of our shelves and had a vague memory that it might be able to be used to clean grease.
I found the bottle my husband had from before we were married, and checked the label. Who knows how old it is since we’ve been married seven years already! Sure enough—it claimed to remove grease stains! I guess I had never needed it before so I didn’t pay attention to it.
In my mind the pants were already ruined, so what did I have to lose?
In retrospect I wish I would have taken a photo of the shorts! Just picture in your mind a pair of shorts with about 10-12 large spots of dark circles all over the front of them.
I poured the goo gone all over the stains. I will admit, I did it somewhat carelessly and just completely soaked the entire area. I didn’t even rub it in. Then I walked away. The day went on and I completely forgot about the shorts.
Later in the day, I returned to the laundry and saw the shorts out of the corner of my eye.
I had to do a double-take!
The stains were completely gone! I couldn’t believe it!
I picked the shorts up, touched them, turned them around, and still was in disbelief that these were the actual same shorts I had poured the Goo Gone on earlier that day.
Make Your Own “Goo Gone” . . . Who Knew?!
I still have a lot of goo gone left in my bottle. It seems like it will last forever! I was curious how expenseive it was, and was surprised to find it on Amazon for less than $5. Not bad to save a nice pair of shorts!
However, being completely enthralled with my new discovery and product testimony, I did a little more research. Just type in goo gone on pinterest and you’ll quickly discover it is popular to make your own goo gone! Who knew?!
Here is my question though. Store bought Goo Gone claims to clean masking tape, crayon, stickers, candle wax, gum, glue, tar/bugs/sap and gooey messes.
Most of the articles I researched about making your own Goo Gone referred to sticker and gunk removal. I’m curious if making your own goo gone will work on everything that goo gone claims to work on, including grease, tar and gooey messes?
Since I’m in to trying new things, maybe I’ll have to make some of my own Goo Gone from scratch and find out! I’ll be sure to let you know the results.
