I’ll just be honest, our family is a book family. We read books. TONS of books. Picture books, biographies, classical fiction, educational books, board books . . . you name it, we read it! And we love it.
One of our all-time favorite things this summer was snuggling as an entirely family on the couch and reading The Princess and the Goblin every night. I couldn’t believe my kids sat through it since there aren’t many pictures, but they just gobbled up every word and still ask about it. It was a very sad day when we had to return it to the library.
Books are one of those things that I love to give for Christmas gifts. I think its because we enjoy it so much as a family and I want other people to find the joy in it too! There are books for every age and stage of life, so I never run out of options or ideas on what people would like. Plus, its a gift they can keep on giving by sharing with someone else when they are done with it!
1. Hero Tales: Volume I
You’ve probably figured out that we love true stories. I find them so inspiring and often convicting. There are four volumes in the Hero Tales books. I checked it out of the library to make sure it was something we’d be interested in, and it is definitely right up my alley!
There are several mini-biographies featured in the book and then each hero has a few additional stories about them. There are questions at the end of each short story for your family to discuss together. I love how it helps me guide the discussion and keeps us all thinking, talking and maybe even debating.
2. Jesus Calling by Sarah Young
A few years ago I received the book Jesus Today and loved it. I loved how it was written like you are receiving a personal letter from God. And each part of the mini-letter (perfect for a daily devotional), is paired with verses directly from the Bible.
3. Pearables: Character Building Kingdom Principles
I’m pretty sure this book was recommended to me by Bonni Greiner from Mom By Example, as books with a purpose that she loved reading to her kids. Any story that encourages character building and kingdom principles is something that I want to be reading to my children. Its helpful to them of course, but its also helpful to me to keep me intentional and thinking of new ways to explain biblical views to my children.
4. Hand Lettering
This is one of those books thats just for fun. I heard about it through Crystal Paine and how she challenged herself to learn a new skill this year. I’ve often been inspired to teach myself new skills like sewing, but I never find the time to do it. I think learning hand lettering seems more practical for my lifestyle because its something I can do with the kids while they are coloring — although I’m sure they would want to learn it with me too!
5. Best Christmas Pageant Ever
This book has been on my list for years and I just never get around to getting it. Isn’t that awful? I guess that’s how life is sometimes though. I have a love for Christmas stories (even though they often make me cry), and because of this love I have a pretty decent stack of Christmas books that I get out when we set up our Christmas tree every year. We only read them through the month of December, and that keeps them extra special.
6. Have you filled a bucket today?
Yet another book recommended by Bonni Greiner! I must really respect her, huh? 🙂 I love to read to my kids, and so intentional picture books for me to read to my kids are always a blessing. This book encourages positive behavior by using the concept of an invisible bucket to show children how rewarding it is to express kindness, appreciation and love.
7. A Creative Minds Biography Book
I recently read one of my kids books we got from the library. It was a biography about Milton Hershey. I was so inspired by this story, Milton’s life, his failures, his background, his successes. I can only imagine what I would learn from each biography in this series!
While I do feel a little silly reading a book for grades 3-6 . . . it is well-written, I can read it quickly, and I can read it while my children are playing blocks and they learn from it too!
