The National Toy Train Museum features numerous model train exhibits, but what makes this museum unique is the variety of train sets you’ll experience in action—including lego train sets!
The collection of model trains is one of the most extensive toy train collections in the world. Trains that children pushed, pulled or rode upon are included as antiques (with my love for history, I found this part of the exhibits particularly interesting!)
Children will love visiting this museum as everyone has the opportunity to operate the five train layouts by pushing simple buttons. Each layout is a different gauge, representing a different 20th Century period. I also love that some train tracks are run lower to the ground, which allows for excellent viewing by the youngest visitors.
Young readers will also enjoy the scavenger hunt (or even those who can’t read and have a parent to read for them). You’ll search the Lego layout, find seven dwarfs, hunt for pink train cars and more!
There’s even a little theater area where children and adults can rest and watch a feature train film, like Thomas.
Saving On Your Visit
Our favorite time to visit the National Toy Train Museum is on Smithsonian Magazine Day in September, when they offer FREE admission.
The museum also offers FREE admission on Saturdays around Christmas if you bring a canned good donation, and on their Fall Open House in October, as well as their Open House in April every year.
You’ll also note FREE admission and discounts on special holidays like Father’s Day (FREE admission for dads), Mother’s Day (FREE admission for moms) and Grandparent’s Day (FREE admission for grandparents). Check their full events calendar for complete listings of discounted days and extra family festivities.
