6 Great Audio Books for Families
Here are 6 books that we’ve read-aloud (or listened to) that are available on Audiobooks.com. You can search all their books (before you start your trial) by clicking the button in the upper right corner of this page.
Probably the most listened to classic for audiobooks for kids is the Little House on the Prairie series. Start at the beginning and listen to them all. Even our boys loved listening to these, and I love that they’ll listen to them for hours. If you think your kids won’t try it, just start playing one while they fidget with puzzles or block building and let it keep playing—or play it during lunch—I think you’ll be surprised at their interest!
Another fantastic book, The Incredible Journey, is the book that the movie Homeward Bound was based on. It’s filled with fun stories of a cat, and two dogs that go on an incredible journey across Canada. We recommend reading the book, then watching the movie with the same title and finally watching Homeward Bound, and comparing all three of them!
Oh my goodness you all, this book, The Princess and the Goblin, is unbelievable! It was recommended to us about 4-5 years ago. We borrowed it from the library and almost cried when we returned it, it was so good. This was our first read-aloud ever (our kids were just 2, 4 and 6 years old at the time). It was written in an older English style, but we got the hang of it after a few chapters.
I was afraid to read it to them because of the title. I couldn’t believe that my friend who recommended it thought this would be good for our family and I was quite skeptical. But wow (I should have better words than that, I just don’t have any words to describe how absolutely good this was!) The depth of the meaning, and storyline behind it, that adults could grasp, yet the creativity and imagination for the younger ones that kept them engaged and begging for more. We highly recommend this one, needless to say. 😉
Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen, would be a great choice of listening material for a boy who maybe is a slower reader or who loves to read but thinks all audio books are for girls. 😉
We listened to The Secret Garden on our road trip last summer and the kids just loved it! Considering its 7 hours long, I think you’ll find it will occupy your kids for awhile.
The Jungle Book is such a fun book to listen to, as it really engages the child’s imagination. Plus, its always fun to reward yourselves after listening to the book, with a family movie night watching the movie!
I recommend searching the Audiobooks.com database before choosing your books. When I searched for Chronicles of Narnia, this boxed set including all the books in the series did not come up, but as I searched other books, this popped up in my recommended titles. I love that you’ll get to listen to 7 books if you choose the set!
